Wine Description

South of the Gevrey finage, on the historic slopes of the Mazoyères climat, Domaine Arlaud 's Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of Burgundy's most seductive Pinot Noirs. Along the Route des Grands Crus, just below the Latricières-Chambertin climat, a first parcel stretches up the hillside, while at the lower end of the slope lies the second parcel from which this cru originates. Planted between 1957 and 1992, Domaine Arlaud 's vines grow here on the soft, slightly sandy clay-limestone soils typical of the area. A pioneer of organic viticulture and then biodynamic viticulture in the Morey Saint Denis appellation, Cyprien Arlaud ensures exclusively natural care, from the vineyard to the winery. The grapes are harvested by hand, with successive sorting on three tables to retain only the finest berries. Approximately one third of the harvest is kept in whole bunches, the rest being destemmed without crushing. After a pre-fermentation cold maceration, winemaking is carried out using indigenous yeasts, with no external inputs, during a long cuvaison lasting almost a month. The wine then spends 16 to 18 months in oak barrels, of which a maximum of 30% are new.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : With its aromatic brilliance and overwhelming delicacy, Domaine Arlaud 's Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru is without doubt the most charming and accessible young wine in its appellation. The almost clockwork precision of winemaking and ageing ensures that the natural suppleness of the grapes is preserved without compromising the cuvée's energy. If it's full of drive and panache today, it'll reach new heights of tenderness after a decade or so of cellaring!

On the nose, the wine develops an enticing bouquet, combining ripe red and black fruit with delicate floral notes. At the back of the glass, there are hints of ageing and noble spices, which will develop over time.

The palate is full-bodied, racy and ample. Silky tannins structure the wine with a remarkable lightness, typical of Cyprien Arlaud's great wines. Flavors of ripe berries and fine spices bring a real delicacy to the tasting, while the powdery accents of dried flowers seem cut from lace. The elegant finish reveals the ageing potential of this great Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru.
