Wine Description
The Coline Mâcon-Bussières red is the entry-level red wine from Domaine de la Sarazinière, the first step before the prestigious Les Devants cuvée, which comes from century-old vines. It is grown on the alkaline clay-limestone soils of Bussières, a terroir that clearly distinguishes this part of the Mâconnais from the softer profiles found a few dozen kilometers away on the granitic soils of the Beaujolais: here, the limestone imparts a mineral structure unique to this corner of southern Burgundy. For its grape varieties, Domaine de la Sarazinière has chosen to grow exclusively Gamay. Philippe and Guillaume Trébignaud stand by this unconventional choice in an appellation better known for its whites, and in a region renowned for its Pinot Noirs. Certified organic, the wine estate cultivates its vines without any inputs, relying on regular soil cultivation and an exclusively hand harvest of grapes at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the philosophy remains the same: indigenous yeasts, classic Burgundian winemaking with full destemming, and no sulfur or fining. The Coline cuvée is then aged in stainless steel tanks for 12 to 18 months—unlike its counterpart, Les Devants, which is aged in barrels—to preserve the fruit’s purity and the direct expression of the terroir.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: White-juice Gamay is often the great forgotten variety of the Mâconnais. Philippe and Guillaume Trébignaud are among those who stubbornly champion it, and they are absolutely right. The terroir of Bussières gives it a profile quite different from that of Beaujolais: more body, a distinct mineral backbone, and a wonderfully pulpy texture. The Coline cuvée is its most direct expression, with its straightforward, unpretentious fruitiness. An honest wine in the best sense of the word, one that simply makes you want to pour another glass as soon as the first is empty!
On the nose, this red Mâcon-Bussières Coline opens with a lively and inviting bouquet dominated by ripe red berries: strawberries and fresh red currants, tart cherries... Floral notes of wild rose and hibiscus add a light touch to the overall profile, while a mineral undertone subtly reflects the limestone character of the Bussières terroir.
On the palate, the attack is clean and juicy. Fresh acidity structures the generous fruitiness, giving it the necessary liveliness to keep the wine from feeling heavy. Fine, well-integrated tannins give structure to the generous body, which returns on the finish with notes of cherry and red currant, accompanied by a subtle mineral undertone that intrigues in the background.
