Wine Description

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair 'sMoulin à Vent Vieilles Vignes occupies a singular place in the winemaker's world, at the crossroads of his Burgundy roots and his passion for the great terroirs of Beaujolais. Although his name is intimately linked with the Côte de Nuits, Thibault Liger-Belair turned his attention to the crus of the South in 2008, convinced that certain Beaujolais terroirs - notably those of Moulin à Vent, located just a hundred kilometers south of Nuits-Saint-Georges - had the potential to rival the great wines of Burgundy. His philosophy is clear: to treat Gamay with the same exacting standards as Pinot Noir, and according to a precise grid, directly inspired by Burgundy tradition. Biodynamic viticulture, hand harvesting followed by parcel-by-parcel winemaking - the hallmark of an ambitious project, designed to deliver a structured, deep, lively Gamay worthy of the finest Beaujolais terroir wines.

In the heart of the appellation, the domaine has selected eight hillside vineyards, renowned for their uniqueness and terroirs particularly well-suited to the expression of Gamay: Les Vieilles Vignes, Les Rouchaux, Les Perrelles, Champ de Cour, Les Vignes Centenaires, Rochegrès, Les Vérillats and La Roche, grouped together under the Domaine des Pierres Roses umbrella. The Moulin à Vent Vieilles Vignes cuvée is a blend of these 8 emblematic plots, whose vines were planted between 1910 and 1955, on poor soils composed mainly of pink granite and decomposing quartz.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Moulin à Vent terroir is one of the most prestigious in the entire Beaujolais region. It also produces the region's most concentrated and juicy wines. Some wines can be kept for 30 years without a single wrinkle, which is as exceptional as it is rare. Thibault Liger-Belair's Moulin à Vent Les Vieilles Vignes is one of the great names in this appellation. Its strength lies in the concentration of its aromas and the freshness of its substance. Ageing is carried out in oak casks to respect the Gamay grape variety and its terroir of origin. Only 60% of the grapes are destemmed, leaving 40% whole-bunches, which bring tannins and concentration. This wine embodies the synthesis of power and elegance, minerality and depth, and holds high the promise of a vibrant, racy Beaujolais, built for ageing as much as for immediate pleasure.

On the nose, the wine develops jammy aromas reminiscent of dates, dried prunes and stewed blueberries. Hints of spice add depth. The whole leaves a sublime impression of gourmet freshness.

On the palate, the wine combines concentrated notes of ripe black fruit with a lovely herbaceous, slightly peppery touch. The body is docile, ample without heaviness, and the tannins melt on the palate. The mineral freshness of granite brings originality and balance to the finish.
