Wine Description
Located on the southern slopes of the appellation, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Henri Gouges ' Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers is one of the commune's historic premier crus. It takes its name from the wild shrub once found on these hillsides. Covering almost 2 hectares, the Domaine Henri Gouges parcels occupy well-exposed slopes with soils combining limestone, outcrops and scree typical of the southern part of the appellation. This soil structure ensures excellent natural drainage, while preserving the freshness necessary for the slow ripening of Pinot Noir, the only grape variety grown here. The vines, on average 50 years old, are meticulously tended to respect natural rhythms and preserve the balance of the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, then winemaked using indigenous yeasts, with careful extraction to preserve the elegance of the fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, with a limited proportion of new wood to refine structure without masking the identity of the climate.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers from Domaine Henri Gouges perfectly illustrates the assertive identity of this emblematic southern climate. Where some Nuits Saint Georges are strict in their youth, Les Pruliers seduces with its subtle balance between charm and power. It's a Premier Cru with character, both full-bodied and expressive, revealing all the racy depth of Pinot Noir on these Côte de Nuits terroirs.
The nose unfolds with remarkable intensity and depth, with scents of black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant jelly. As the wine opens, it releases complex notes of damp undergrowth, licorice and a delicate hint of gray pepper. Aeration also reveals an elegantly powdery floral dimension, between fresh violets and peonies. This particularly charming bouquet carries with it all the refinement and nobility of a Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers.
On the palate, the clean, precise attack, with its almost jammy red and black fruit flavors, unfolds with generous greed. The finely chiselled tannic framework is still firm, asserting a real power of body while retaining the delicacy of a velvety texture. Notes of sweet spice and a hint of saltiness on the finish prolong the tasting experience with their persistent freshness and remarkable mineral tension. This great wine's formidable evolutionary potential is obvious.
