Wine Description

Domaine Humbert Frères ' Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques is strategically located on the upper part of the hillside, just above the famous 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques and in the immediate vicinity of the Grand Cru Clos de Bèze. This privileged position enables the old Pinot Noir vines to benefit from both the drainage and the sunshine of the upper slopes. The soils of Estournelles Saint-Jacques form a complex mosaic of red clay mixed with large quantities of pebbles and limestone, as well as white marl in the subsoil. Hand harvesting is followed by natural fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Subsequent ageing lasts between 15 and 18 months, exclusively in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques from Domaine Humbert Frères stands out for its elegance and noble structure. This Premier Cru is a model of balance that has nothing to envy the Grand Cru climats it adjoins. It offers a remarkable balance between the power of Gevrey Chambertin terroirs and great tannic finesse. Enough to keep for ten years or so!

The nose is deep, complex and racy, opening with an intensity of deep black fruits that merge with Gevrey's floral signature, evoking peony, wilted rose and violet. Ageing brings out delicate nuances of mocha, tobacco, licorice and an appetizing earthy touch.

The attack on the palate is full and powerful, but immediately tempered by remarkable elegance and finesse. The structure is firm and very well built, carried by dense, fine, silky tannins that coat the palate without assaulting. The finish is exceptionally long, harmonious and refined, with lingering noble fruit and spicy notes. This wine is an authentic vin de garde that will reach its peak drinking after ten to fifteen years in the cellar.
