Wine Description
Domaine Humbert Frères ' Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle benefits from a particularly well-situated Côte de Nuits terroir, adjacent to prestigious Burgundy climats such as Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru and Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. The old Pinot Noir vines planted at mid-slope benefit from excellent exposure to the rising sun, and sink their roots into shallow limestone soils rich in rocky debris and red marl. This particular geology gives the 1er Cru Petite Chapelle density and flesh that are more generous than those of the higher altitude Premiers Crus. After hand harvesting and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, the wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, about a third of which are new.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle from Domaine Humbert Frères stands out for its remarkable balance between rich fruit and fine, structured tannins. This is a highly expressive cuvée with ageing potential that will delight the most patient after a few years in the cellar.
The nose is powerful, opulent and seductively rich, opening with a festival of very ripe black fruits such as candied black cherry, crushed blackberry and a hint of prune. This fruity richness is finely balanced by floral notes of iris and tertiary accents.
The attack on the palate is fleshy and dense, the wine immediately filling the palate with soft, full body. The wine is underpinned by fresh acidity that is less aggressive than in high-altitude climates, lending harmonious balance to the whole. The flavors of concentrated black fruits and spices linger for a long time, stretched out by a dense, sapid and persistent finish. This wine, while accessible in its youth thanks to its fruit, is clearly cut out for ageing, and its richness makes it an ideal partner for gastronomy.
