Wine Description
Domaine Humbert Frères ' Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot is a cuvée as exclusive as it is prestigious, often considered one of Gevrey Chambertin's noblest and most discreet. Particularly renowned for its location, it is situated in the heart of the Combe de Lavaux, on a steep slope overlooking the climate of Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru and bordering illustrious 1er Cru terroirs such asEstournelles Saint-Jacques. This altitude and predominantly southerly exposure favor slow, complete ripening of the Pinot Noir, developing a complex aromatic richness. Poissenot 's soil is typically clay-limestone, but is characterized by a strong presence of rock and hard limestone, which ensures excellent drainage and forces the roots of the old vines to dig deep. The Humbert brothers' low-intervention winemaking involves spontaneous fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, to preserve the grapes' authentic expression, before ageing in French oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, to allow the grapes to develop their full potential and reveal the quintessence of Pinot Noir on this great Côte de Nuits terroir.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : The exceptional geographical location of Domaine Humbert Frères ' Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot lends it a distinctive finesse and depth that are no match for some of Burgundy's Grands Crus.
The nose is complex, deep and evolving, opening with an intense palette of black fruits such as black cherry, wild blackberry and plum, complemented by hints of licorice and graphite. Well-integrated barrel ageing reveals subtle touches of blond tobacco, delicate spices and nascent undergrowth or truffle.
The attack on the palate is powerful yet surprisingly silky, the wine showing great density and concentration. The texture is velvety and the tannins are fine, elegant and delicately coat the palate, auguring excellent ageing potential. Black fruit flavors mingle with chalky, saline accents on the finish, resulting in exceptional length.
