Wine Description

Graeme and Julie Bott 's Côte-Rôtie Lieu-dit Semons is one of the rare gems from this Rhône Valley wine estate that's impossible to miss. Available in just 800 bottles, this wine is the elegant embodiment of the Côte Blonde terroir, a slope of Côte Rôtie famous for its granitic soils and southeast exposure. On the steep, almost 50% sloping terraces of the locality from which it takes its name, this parcel-based cuvée comes from Syrah vines planted in the 1980s. Manual labor is essential here, and reflects the artisanal and passionate philosophy of Domaine Bott. The grapes are harvested by hand and completely destemmed to ensure a pure, delicate expression of the fruit. Winemaking is followed by twenty months' ageing in barrels of several wines, allowing subtle micro-oxygenation while limiting the amount of wood. The wine then rests in bottle for a year to harmonize aromas and structure.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine Bott is used to producing exceptional and exclusive cuvées, but it's with undisguised pleasure that we discover the Côte-Rôtie Lieu-dit Semons. Its profile, characteristic of Côte Blonde, the most southerly part of Côte Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley, is immediately seductive with its restrained generosity. Graeme and Julie Bott have created a racy wine of rare delicacy that will age gracefully for at least twenty years.

The nose is marked by aromatic complexity, blending characteristic floral notes of violet and peony with blackberry and blackcurrant aromas. Delicately smoky, spicy touches of pepper, licorice and clove evoke the granitic character of the Côte Blonde terroir.

On the palate, a silky, full body floods the palate with concentrated flavors, where blueberry and blackberry coulis blend with notes of black olive and violet. The tannic structure emerges with finesse, elegantly underlining the refined complexity of woody and mineral notes combining graphite, smoke and black pepper. The wine then refines to open with a mineral finish, where the typical freshness of the Côte Blonde takes hold.
