Cuvée Auguste is an exceptional red wine produced by Julien Guillot at Clos des Vignes du Maynes, an emblematic Mâconnais wine estate. This legendary wine is made from Pinot Fin, a rare massal selection planted in 1964, heir to a prestigious winegrowing heritage dating back to the monks of Cluny Abbey around the year 910. Winemaking follows a traditional method with semi-carbonic fermentation in whole bunches, indigenous yeasts and no addition of sulfur during fermentation. After ageing for 10 months in multi-wine barrels, the wine is bottled without filtering or fining, thus preserving all its authenticity.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : This Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Auguste is rooted in a clay-limestone Middle Jurassic terroir called Bathonian, rich in pearly slabs and calcite, which gives the wine a vibrant minerality and unique character. Grown organically since 1954 and biodynamically since 1998, the 60+-year-old vines are carefully tended. Naturally, the grapes are harvested by hand, and the winemaking process is natural.
On the nose, the wine offers intense red fruit notes of morello cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, accompanied by subtle floral touches and a hint of menthol and sweet spices.
On the palate, the attack is lively, marked by superb freshness. A silky texture envelops complex flavors of ripe red berries, enhanced by chalky minerality and fine tension. Tannins of rare elegance provide structure and balance.
