Wine Description
Domaine Meyer-Fonné Syrah Le Samson is a singular proposition in theAlsace wine landscape, a rarity that intrigues as much as it seduces. Planted between 2019 and 2021 on a small parcel in the heart of Katzenthal's granite terroir, this Syrah embodies Félix Meyer 's bold gamble: acclimatize a southern grape variety on the dry, bright slopes at the heart of Alsace's vineyards, in a changing climatic context. The choice of granite is not insignificant, as this poor, draining soil, combined with a warm, dry, south-facing microclimate, enables the grape variety to control its phenolic ripeness while retaining freshness and tension. Winemaking is in keeping with the spirit of the entire wine estate, with a hands-on, low-intervention approach. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously using indigenous yeasts, and aged in old oak foudres on fine lees to preserve the purity of the fruit without weighing it down with wood.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Syrah Le Samson is in line with Domaine Meyer-Fonné's desire to explore new balances while remaining faithful to its terroir. The result is an atypical Alsace red wine, with a slender frame, notes of black fruit, pepper and violets, carried by a beautiful mineral energy, the signature of Katzenthal's granite terroir. Few wine estates in the region master Syrah at this level. In the Alsatian context, this is a pioneering cuvée. Tasting confirms its success, both exclusive and promising.
The nose opens with floral and fruity freshness, with violet, blackcurrant, blackberry and a delicate hint of black pepper. In the background, smoky, mineral nuances typical of granite emerge, with hints of graphite and dry earth. After aeration, sweet spices such as cloves and juniper berries add complexity.
On the palate, the velvety attack reveals a juicy body, carried by aromas of ripe black fruit, and structured by magnificent freshness. The tannins are refined and elegant. Spicy notes of licorice and black pepper are found at the center of the palate, balanced by a lively acidity that avoids excess. The finish prolongs the tasting experience with aromatic persistence, combining black fruits, spices and a smoky mineral imprint.
