Wine Description

Ostertag’s Riesling Grand Cru Muenchberg embodies eight centuries of history. “Muenchberg,” which means “Monks’ Mountain,” is an amphitheater-shaped slope of pink sandstone, facing due south in a valley at the foot of the Vosges Mountains, in the town of Nothalten. It was the Cistercian monks of Baumgarten Abbey who first planted vines there in the 12th century. The soil consists of a substrate of pink Vosges sandstone and volcanic sediments, which give the wine a distinctive spicy energy and sensuality. The grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentation is a long process driven by native yeasts.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Ostertag’s Riesling Grand Cru Muenchberg ranks among the great Rieslings of Alsace, without a doubt. The expression of the terroir is perfect, with rare finesse. The wine’s clarity and precision make it one of the best Rieslings in Alsace. Arthur combines the brilliance and luscious fruitiness with the power and depth imparted by this fascinating terroir.

On the nose, there are slightly smoky notes, fresh flowers, orange peel, and a hint of mirabelle plum. After aeration, more exotic notes of pineapple, passion fruit, and lime round out the bouquet.

The palate is deeply complex, the fruit is juicy, and the salinity that emerges on the finish is captivating.
