Wine Description
Ostertag’s Fronholz Riesling is a “stone wine”—as Arthur calls it—and that description says it all. Located at the top of the Epfig hill, this vineyard enjoys a southwest exposure, a rarity in Alsace for this grape variety. Long overgrown with woods, the vineyard was planted relatively late, before André—and later Arthur—revealed the truly remarkable character of this terroir, giving the Riesling its characteristic salty and spicy notes.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Ostertag’s Fronholz Riesling is proof that a terroir can have a soul. Arthur Ostertag stands out from the rest through his thoughtful approach to working the soil and crafting his wines. The quality of the Fronholz soils is extraordinary. It would come as no surprise if this vineyard site were soon to be classified as a Premier Cru. A dry, lively, and grand Riesling that deserves a few years of cellaring to reveal its full potential.
On the nose, subtle hints of acacia and lilac punctuate a lively profile, whose purity is extended by harmonious, subtle bitter notes. Hints of apple, white peach, and citrus round out this delicate and very fresh bouquet.
Ageing on fine lees shapes the profile of a rich wine on the palate. The grape variety takes a back seat here; it serves as a vehicle for the soil’s energies. The finish is briny and long—exactly what we were looking for.
