Wine Description

Domaine Monier Perréol 's Saint Joseph Châtelet is in the tradition of high-expression reds from the northern Rhône. On these south-facing slopes of granite mixed with limestone, the Syrah vines flourish in a subtle balance between solar maturity and mineral freshness. Biodynamic viticulture on the Châtelet plot enables the 30-year-old vines to sink their roots deep into the soil to draw on its water and mineral resources. Each bunch is harvested at precise maturity, then partially destemmed, before fermentation with indigenous yeasts and ageing in old oak barrels, chosen to accompany the wine without marking it. Domaine Monier Perreol 's patient, artisanal approach delivers a red Saint Joseph on the edge, between delicacy and power.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine Monier Perréol 's Saint Joseph Châtelet is a masterful combination of rigorous structure and gentle expression. It's a well-balanced, chiselled Syrah , with ageing potential that's out of the ordinary in this sector, allowing it to tell the story of the granitic hillsides of the Rhône for at least 15 years. If a 1er Cru classification existed for Saint Joseph, this cuvée by Monier Perreol would certainly be one of them!

The nose opens with greedy scents of black fruits, enhanced by a floral touch of violets and a dash of black pepper typical of Syrah. Hints of licorice, rosemary and a hint of smoke add richness and elegance.

On the palate, the wine unfurls a fine, silky body, with tightly-packed tannins forming a vibrant, energetic framework. Juicy black fruit mingles with peppery aromas to create a very long finish, while chalky minerality adds just the right amount of salivation and relief to the finish, giving the wine a balance rarely achieved.
