Wine Description
On the border between Morey Saint Denis and Chambolle Musigny, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Georges Roumier 's Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is born on one of the area's most contrasting slopes. The wine estate's plots are equally divided between the two types of soil that make up the prestigious climat: Terres Blanches, rich in calcareous marl and marine fossils, and Terres Rouges, more clayey-limestone and compact. This dual geological origin lends the wine a singular structural ambivalence, between fullness and tension, smoothness and rigor. On the east-facing slopes of these two parcels, the 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines stretch from the bottom to the top of the hillside adjacent to the famous Clos de Tart in Morey Saint Denis. Hand harvested and sorted, the bunches are two-thirds destemmed. Applying a parcel-by-parcel approach, Domaine Georges Roumier vinifies the grapes in two distinct cuvées, each using natural fermentation on indigenous yeasts, with no enzymes added. The two cuvées are then blended before ageing in experienced oak barrels for a further 16 months.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine Georges Roumier 's Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is a perfect balance between the natural power of the cru and the finesse that characterizes the wine estate's style. The blend of the two terroirs gives the wine a complex architecture, where the fullness of the substance is coupled with an almost austere mineral framework in its youth. There's no doubt that this Grand Cru will reveal all its multiple layers after a long ageing period of up to twenty years!
The bouquet impresses with intense aromas of ripe red fruit and dark berries, from juicy cherry to raspberry and wild blueberry. The elegance of fresh flowers reminiscent of peony and rose petals mingle with the delicately spicy, peppery and slightly musky notes of the terroir. The fresh, mineral backdrop reveals the full complexity of this Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, which only needs time to unfold.
The palate is impressively complex, with multiple layers that gradually coat the palate. Finely chalky tannins integrate with the muscular tension of shell limestone, while aromas of peony and blood orange peel stretch over the dense velvet of ripe red fruit. The persistent minerality of the finish tightens the substance and concentrates the relief of floral and peppery flavors in an endless, racy salivation.
