Wine Description

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht 's Riesling Grand Cru Hengst is one of the most characteristic expressions of this Wintzenheim hillside, renowned for the natural power that the Oligocene limestone imparts to itsAlsace Grand Cru wines. On this steep south-east-facing slope, the iron-rich limestone marl produces slow but perfect ripening, aided in 2023 by a hot, dry climate that produced small, healthy bunches of grapes of exemplary ripeness. The Riesling vines, planted in high density in 2016 from selections massales du Grand Cru Brand, are rooted in this shallow, stony soil, which channels vigor and reveals the precision of the terroir. Domaine Zind Humbrecht's biodynamic viticulture, combined with slow, natural fermentation and ageing on lees, produces a dry white wine whose majestic structure and refined density recall the historic stature of Grand Cru Hengst.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Hengst is one of thoseAlsace Grand Cru terroirs where Riesling takes on an almost architectural dimension. This vintage is a striking illustration of this: maturity can be read in the depth of the material, but the presence of limestone sculpts a tight, precise tension. In this Riesling Grand Cru Hengst from Domaine Zind Humbrecht, we find the restrained power typical of the cru, and the purity demanded by a great dry Alsace wine. The wine is already remarkably easy to read, while revealing an ageing potential that will easily extend over several decades.

The nose is discreet, still marked by the natural aromatic sobriety of the limestone and the youth of the cru. Delicate nuances of ripe citrus fruit, honey and wet stones gradually emerge. A few years' cellaring will allow them to develop fully.

On the palate, the sensation of power asserts itself from the outset, supported by a dense body that chiseled acidity stretches out with beautiful length. The wine's minerality lends it a linear energy that runs throughout the tasting, right through to the finish, where a sensation of purity lingers for a long time.
