Wine Description
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's Clos Windsbuhl Chardonnay comes from the prestigious Clos Windsbuhl, a vineyard located high above Hunawihr on a steep, south-facing hillside. This terroir is underlain by Muschelkalk limestone, with areas where the bedrock outcrops, favoring efficient natural drainage and moderate water supply. Chardonnay is grown on the cooler part of the Clos, beneath the imposing forest that overlooks it. Chardonnay, a minority grape variety in a Clos historically dominated by Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, is cultivated using certified biodynamic methods, with hand harvesting and careful grape selection. Winemaking is based on spontaneous fermentation, generally in large foudres, followed by prolonged ageing on fine lees, without any marked woodiness in order to preserve the mineral purity of the site.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: this Clos Windsbuhl Chardonnay from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht occupies a singular place in the wine estate's range, offering a rare interpretation of Chardonnay in Alsace, more focused on tension and verticality than on opulence. It stands out in the winemaking landscape as a precise terroir wine, capable of competing in complexity with some of the great gourmet whites, while retaining a profoundly Alsatian identity marked by freshness and minerality.
The nose opens with fine notes of white flowers, ripe pear, crisp apple and fresh citrus, to which are added nuances of discreet brioche and limestone. After aeration, the bouquet gains in depth, revealing a saltier, slightly toasted dimension that reinforces the sensation of purity and aromatic precision.
The palate seduces with its taut, precise texture, underpinned by lively acidity that stretches the material. Flavors of stone fruit, juicy citrus and saline minerality are set off by a texture that is both creamy and energetic, before lengthening to a long, elegant finish. Domaine Zind Humbrecht has created a wine that reflects its terroir and is in line with Alsace wines, while asserting its own identity.
