Wine Description

This Crémant Clos Windsbuhl Brut Nature from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is produced on the Clos Windsbuhl, located in the hills above Hunawihr, north of Colmar. This historic vineyard, first mentioned in the 14th century under the name "Erlach", has a long history. This ancient vineyard, once an imperial property and passed through the hands of Alsatian noble families, has been cultivated by the Zind-Humbrecht wine estate since 1987. Situated at an altitude of around 350 metres on a south to south-east-facing slope, the terroir is underlain by Muschelkalk limestone, sometimes very shallow with an outcrop of bedrock, providing excellent drainage. This cuvée is made from chardonnay, a minority grape variety in the clos, dominated by pinot gris and gewurztraminer. This blanc de blancs benefits from the wine estate's organic and biodynamic viticultural practices, as well as from traditional winemaking methods aimed at purity of expression. This process, combined with a brut nature without dosage, guarantees maximum readability of the terroir, offering a crémant where tension and minerality are fully perceptible, the signature of the Zind-Humbrecht style.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: this crémant from a terroir renowned for the tension of its wines is a characterful cuvée in the wine estate's range, combining mineral precision and aromatic maturity. It expresses the Clos Windsbuhl terroir with rare clarity, combining precise minerality, elegance and aromatic density. In the wine estate's range, it is positioned as a highly readable cuvée, capable of seducing demanding sparkling white wine lovers while remaining true to the purity and Alsatian identity of Chardonnay.

The nose unfolds with finesse and verticality, revealing a chiselled aromatic framework where notes of fresh citrus fruit, lemon zest and crisp green apple mingle with more subtle nuances of white flowers, damp chalk and oyster shell, the signature of the limestone bedrock. With aeration, hints of fresh hazelnut, breadcrumbs and a delicate iodine sensation appear, giving depth and relief to the whole.

The palate is sapid and seductive in its openness and energy, carried by a straightforward, structuring acidity that lengthens the substance. The fine, persistent effervescence accompanies a taut midpalate of ripe lemon, juicy pear and gunflint. The finish is saline and persistent, almost tactile, underlining the nobility of the Windsbuhl terroir. Domaine Zind Humbrecht delivers a Crémant d'Alsace of remarkable presence and extraordinary delicacy.
