The Morgon Côte du Py from Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes is the wine estate’s flagship cuvée, the one that has built the reputation of both the wine estate and the entire hillside. The family’s vineyards cover 2.2 hectares of the Côte du Py, famous for its weathered schist soil rich in manganese, which gives the wines remarkable structure and aging potential. Half of the grapes are vinified whole, while the other half are fully destemmed, before ageing in closed concrete tanks.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Morgon Côte du Py cuvée from Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes is the wine that has changed many people’s perception of Beaujolais. A bright future lies ahead for this Côte du Py, which will surprise many with its complexity and ageing potential.
The nose offers a bouquet with beautiful energy, featuring rich red fruits that blossom in the glass. The weathered rock of the Py immediately reveals that tension between fruit and stone that characterizes great Morgons.
The palate is perfectly balanced, with subtle tannins, crisp acidity, plenty of tension, and a lively, lingering finish. This is a top-class Gamay from a challenging vintage.
