Long description

Thibault Liger-Belair owns two wine estates: one family-run, ancestral estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, and the other in Beaujolais, in the Moulin à Vent appellation.

Historical roots in Nuits Sant Georges

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair embodies the rare union of Burgundian heritage and masterful modernity. Located in the heart of Nuits Saint Georges, it has been run since 2001 by Thibault Liger-Belair, great-grandson of the estate's founder. With singular energy, he infuses this family heritage with his own vision of wine: that of an artisan winemaker in tune with the soil, the seasons and the vines.

Right from the start, Thibault made the demanding choice to convert the entire vineyard toorganic farming, then to biodynamic viticulture. Horse-drawn ploughing, deliberately limited yields, working at nature's pace: everything is designed to enable the vines to express their terroir to the full. This approach naturally extends to the cellar, where winemaking is gentle, precise and non-interventionist. Nothing is set in stone, everything is adapted: to the vintage, to the climate, to the personality of each plot.

This is one of the major strengths of the wine estate: Thibault Liger-Belair vinifies each climate separately, with an almost intuitive attention to detail. Longer or shorter maceration periods, varying proportions of whole-bunch grapes, carefully selected wood and its origin - every detail is designed to respect the unique character of each terroir. The result is wines with an assertive style that's always clear, between depth and precision. They appeal as much to discerning connoisseurs as to palates in search of emotion.

But Thibault doesn't stop at excellence in his cuvées: he is also committed to the recognition of terroirs. He is actively involved in promoting the "Les Saint-Georges" parcel, the jewel in the crown of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in favor of its classification as a Grand Cru. A cause he defends with conviction, convinced - and rightly so - that this historic terroir deserves to be recognized at the highest level.

Beyond Nuits Saint Georges, the wine estate also expresses itself through a tight selection of exceptional climats, each carefully vinified to reveal its singularity. In the Vosne-Romanée area, the wine estate has created two outstanding cuvées: Richebourg Grand Cru, a jewel of finesse and depth, where the intensity of the Pinot Noir reaches new heights of balance; and Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which combines the solemnity of the place with a dense, racy, long-lasting body.

In Chambolle-Musigny, we find two distinct expressions: the cuvée Vieilles Vignes, elegant and vibrant, made from a blend of old plots, and the Beaux Bruns - Fouchères, which combines the structure of the northern part of the appellation with the delicacy of its southern slope. Further north, Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Aux Charmes offers delicious power while retaining a fine finesse, true to the identity of this distinctive terroir.

In white, Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Charmes, born on the limestone heights of Lugny, in the Mâconnais, seduces with its tension and straightforwardness, while Bourgogne Aligoté Clos des Perrières La Combe, made from Aligoté Doré planted on an old quarry in Nuits, precisely expresses the potential of this often underestimated grape variety.

The arrival of Moulin à Vent

It was in 2003 that Thibault Liger-Belair, driven by a desire to restore Gamay to its former glory, decided to settle in the Beaujolais region, where he had spent part of his studies. He chose the Moulin à Vent appellation, seduced by the depth of its granite terroirs and convinced of the immense potential of this often underestimated terroir.

With the same exacting standards he applies to his Burgundy crus, Thibault Liger-Belair founded the Domaine des Pierres Roses, a wine estate in its own right, dedicated to the rediscovery of Gamay in its noblest expression. The vines, also cultivated biodynamically on manganese-rich granite soils, produce powerful, structured wines of great depth. This work, carried out according to the same principles of gentle winemaking and parcel-by-parcel analysis as in Burgundy, makes the Domaine des Pierres Roses an address apart in the Beaujolais landscape, between tradition and ambition.

The Moulin à Vent Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from plots over 65 years old, rooted in the pink granite typical of the appellation. It reveals a full-bodied, intense Gamay with tight but fine tannins, often reminiscent of the wine estate's great Pinot Noirs. As for the Moulin à Vent La Roche cuvée, it is born on one of the area's most mineral vineyards, facing due south on the hillside, on outcropping bedrock. It's a straight, vertical, taut wine, carried by an almost saline energy that testifies to the singularity of its terroir.

Through his Burgundy and Beaujolais crus, Thibault Liger-Belair asserts a singular approach, attentive to every nuance of terroir. Far from stylistic effects, his wines favor elegance over demonstration, depth over ease. And in every one of them, we find that vibrant tension between rigor and sensitivity, undoubtedly the most intimate mark of Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair.
