Wine Description
Thierry Allemand’s Cornas Chaillot is the creation of a man who was not destined to become a legend. A former electrical engineer, Thierry Allemand acquired his first vineyard plot in 1981 and embarked on a daring venture in winemaking, learning the trade on the steep terraces of Cornas at Domaine Robert Michel. The estate produces only two iconic single-vineyard wines, Chaillot and Reynard, as well as a sulfur-free wine depending on the vintage, all made exclusively from Syrah. The Chaillot cuvée is made from vines ranging in age from 5 to 40 years, planted on the clay-limestone soils of Chaillot and La Côte.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Thierry Allemand’s Cornas Chaillot is one of those wines you never forget. The estate’s production is very limited, and 85% of these highly sought-after wines are exported, making them all the more rare on the French market.
The nose surprises with notes of smoked cured meats, black fruits, and black tea, in a deep and wild profile, complemented by aromas of dried garrigue and violet petals—a bouquet that is both dark and floral, with striking complexity.
The palate is spicy, with a dense texture; the tannins are present yet extremely fine, and the finish is exceptionally long. A velvety texture carries savory fruit enveloped in spices, supported by sophisticated tannins that evolve into notes of graphite, tightening the finish toward a promising length.
