In Villié Morgon, in the heart of the Beaujolais region, the Jean Foillard wine estate has established itself as a benchmark among natural wine artisans and advocates of the region's revival. In 1981, this winegrower's son and grandson took over the family wine estate to develop a certain idea of the quality potential of Beaujolais. Over the decades, this winemaker has forged a name for himself as much as he has contributed to reshaping the winegrowing landscape with his inimitable style combining respect for the vines, pure expression of Gamay, and enhancement of the emblematic terroirs of Morgon, Fleurie, and Brouilly.

A family-run wine estate serving the great terroirs of Beaujolais

The wine estate, which today covers some twenty hectares, is made up exclusively of Gamay vines, the flagship grape variety of the Beaujolais region. Cultivated for over thirty years according to the principles oforganic farming, the old vines - whose average age reaches 65 years - draw their expression from complex schist and granite soils. This combination gives the wines a depth and elegance that have become cult favorites.

A philosophy of life

For over forty years, Jean Foillard has cultivated a precise vision of viticulture: that of a living wine, faithful to its origins. Whole-bunch harvesting, indigenous yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, no filtration, minimal or no sulfur : his radical choices favor a no-frills approach, seeking above all to let his terroirs speak as freely as possible. Ageing is carried out in old barrels to preserve the fruitiness of the Gamay and express the identity of the vintage without make-up.

For him, the role of the winemaker is to observe, to accompany, but never to constrain. This requirement is reflected in each cuvée, where finesse, texture and aromatic precision echo the singularity of each terroir.

Terroirs of character

The historic heart of the wine estate lies in the great terroirs of the Morgon appellation.

Volcanic and granite, the prestigious Côte du Py is undoubtedly the most emblematic cru, offering wines of remarkable power and complexity. Within the Côte du Py, the wine estate cultivates excellence on the sandy, decomposed schist soils of the Corcelette parcel, whose wines are characterized by a structure and finesse that will stand the test of time.

Further north, in Fleurie, parcels of pink granitic soils favor a more floral, silky expression, producing wines of remarkable elegance. The wine estate also operates on the slopes of Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly, where the Gamay grape reveals a more fruity, supple and immediate profile. This is where the wine estate's most profound cuvées are born. Foillard's Morgon Côte du Py reveals a dense, vibrant character that lends itself to long ageing.

The cuvée Morgon 3.14, rare and highly prized by connoisseurs, brings together the finest expressions of these Gamay vines, in a tribute to the complexity of the terroir.

More delicate and airy, Fleurie charms with its subtle floral notes and silky lightness, embodying the refinement typical of this appellation.

In Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly, the cuvées express a generous fruitiness combined with vibrant freshness, perfect for a tasting experience that's accessible yet full of character.
