The Givry 1er Cru Petit Marole 2024 from Domaine François Lumpp is a little-known gem from Burgundy. The Petit Marole vineyard covers just 0.76 hectares on the hills above Givry, in the Côte Chalonnaise. Few lieux-dits within this appellation pack such precision into such a small area. It is precisely this exclusivity that shapes the character of this cuvée.
The plot stretches across an elevation of 250 meters, facing due east and southeast. This dual orientation captures the morning light and preserves the coolness of the nights. The soils combine limestone and fine marl, a substrate that retains just the right amount of moisture while forcing the roots to dig deep. This tension between rich and poor soil shapes a Pinot Noir that is both full-bodied and well-structured. Here, the grape variety expresses a rare precision, underpinned by the natural minerality of the limestone.
The grapes are harvested by hand and then fully destemmed. Cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes fermentation, allowing for the gentle extraction of aromatic compounds. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts, which faithfully reflect the expression of the terroir. Aging lasts 12 months in barrels, 70% of which are new: a significant, deliberate proportion that refines the texture without overpowering the fruit. The result is a balanced structure with well-integrated oak.

The Petit Marole exemplifies what François Lumpp does best: a pursuit of precision that never sacrifices emotion for technique. Within the landscape of the Côte Chalonnaise, this 1er Cru holds a special place—that of wines that don’t need to overdo it. Let it age in the cellar until 2029, ideally until 2032: that’s when this wine will reveal its full complexity. Served at 16°C, it pairs with a veal medallion with sweetbreads and porcini mushrooms with disarming ease. A great vintage—and one that will age beautifully.
The nose
The nose opens with distinct red fruit: fresh cherry, ripe raspberry. Floral notes of peony and violet slip in naturally. A hint of delicate spices emerges gradually, discreet, almost whispered. The finish remains bright, taut, with an elegance that needs no proof.
The Palate
On the palate, the attack is full-bodied, driven by ripe, generous fruit. The texture envelops the palate with remarkable silkiness. The tannic structure is precise, without any harshness: it propels the energy of the terroir toward a long, pure finish. This sensation of purity on the finish encapsulates the very spirit of Petit Marole.
The Givry 1er Cru appellation is one of the most structured in the Côte Chalonnaise, the Burgundian region that stretches south of the Côte de Beaune. The soils here are a blend of limestone and marl, providing the Pinot Noir with a mineral foundation rarely found at this level on the Burgundian scale. Givry’s Premier Crus stand out for their ability to combine depth and freshness—two qualities that the 2024 vintage seems to have expressed particularly well.
Le Petit Marole follows this tradition while possessing its own unique character. Its small size, its exposure, and the expertise of Domaine François Lumpp make it one of the appellation’s most precise expressions. This is not a showy wine. It is a wine of conviction.
