Wine Description
The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières from Domaine des Lambrays is one of the best-kept secrets of a wine estate most commonly associated with the Côte de Nuits and its iconic red Clos. Yet this white wine plot, covering less than thirty ares and stretching from the base to the top of the Folatières slope, traverses the appellation’s entire range of geological layers, endowing the wine with a terroir complexity of exceptional richness. Although little known to wine enthusiasts, this Les Folatières Premier Cru from Domaine des Lambrays easily rivals the appellation’s most established wines.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières from Domaine des Lambrays is one of the most valuable discoveries in the lineup, overshadowed by the great red Clos that captures everyone’s attention. This vineyard yields a Chardonnay with layered complexity and the potential to age for several decades—a quality few Premier Crus can claim.
The nose is delicate, airy, and exceptionally refined, opening with a bouquet of white flowers and ripe white fruits, ranging from pear to vine peach. Notes of toasted hazelnut and a buttery touch, derived from oak ageing, gradually enrich the profile, while a mineral character and a subtle hint of citrus provide the characteristic tension of the great Chardonnays of the Côte de Beaune.
On the palate, the texture is creamy and generous, with remarkable smoothness, supported by lively acidity that keeps the wine in balance and gives it remarkable structure. Flavors of toasted almond, acacia honey, and candied citrus fruits sweep across the palate with breadth, before a lingering, salty minerality rounds out the tasting with a long, fresh, and exceptionally pure finish—a promise of beautiful aging potential over several decades.
