Domaine Moric's Blaufränkisch Burgenland cuvée is made from around 70% Lutzmannsburg grapes. The remainder comes from Zagersdorf, Sankt Georgen and Grosshöflein in northern Burgenland. The grapes grow on a variety of soils ranging from sandy limestone to clay, typical of the Pannonian Sea.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : This Blaufränkisch Burgenland is winemaked in whole bunches for 15% of the cuvée. Fermentation is spontaneous, lasting 18 to 22 days in open stainless steel tanks. Ageing lasts 15 months in 500- to 4,500-liter barrels, without fining or filtering, and with little sulfiting. Roland Velich's Blaufränkisch combines accessibility and complexity. This wine is ideal for immediate drinking, but also has impressive ageing potential.
On the nose, delicate floral notes of violets and small wild flowers emerge, giving the wine a touch of refinement. Accents of damp undergrowth, autumn leaves and crushed stone add a fresh, mineral dimension.
On the palate, this Blaufränkisch is silky and charming, with fresh acidity and tannins that gain presence with age. Notes of wild berries, morello cherries and blood orange combine to create a juicy, complex wine with excellent length and a Burgundy-like acid structure.
