Wine Description
Sankt Georgen from the Moric wine estate, formerly known as "Serious Wine from a Georgeous Place" for its unique taste, is now a cult Burgenland white wine. Roland Velich, in his quest for perfection, vinified the Krainer parcel separately, presenting Sankt Georgen's leading Veltliner.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : The Sankt Georgen vines are planted in the fossil-rich limestone soils of the village of Neusiedlersee Hugelland, giving this Gruner Veltliner unique characteristics. This wine is more reminiscent of a Burgundy Cru than a classic Lower Austrian Gruner Veltliner, emphasizing the particular terroir rather than typical varietal characteristics. No new oak is used, only old Stockinger casks, preserving the wine's purity and finesse.
Sankt Georgen opens with a nose of exceptional finesse, revealing subtle density and tension. Aromas of ripe lemon and bergamot zest are immediately present, followed closely by notes of grapefruit and lightly smoky flint. Hints of toasted almonds and bread crust round out this aromatic profile, offering a fresh, mineral bouquet focused on herbaceous finesse rather than fruit.
On the palate, this Gruner Veltliner impresses with its liveliness and precision. Citrus fruit transforms into the salty notes typical of Moric, dominating the palate, offering a taste experience marked by striking minerality. The texture is both tight and juicy, with notes of citrus, lime and pomelo. The acidity is lively and well-integrated, offering a remarkable sensation of freshness, while the minerality recalls the vineyard's fossil-rich limestone soils.
