Domaine Thierry et Pascale Matrot 's Meursault Rouge brilliantly demonstrates the uniqueness of Pinot Noir grown on terroirs usually reserved for whites. The twenty-year-old vines stretch along the lower slopes of the Volnay Santenots, on shallow clay-limestone soils. Here, the wine expresses optimal ripeness, solid structure and a bright, fruity profile.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Domaine Matrot 's Meursault Rouge stands out for its precision and fleshy fruitiness, marked by a tension sometimes reminiscent of Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. An admirably chiselled expression of Pinot Noir, ideal for lovers of structured power and refined elegance.
The bouquet is marked by aromas of fresh cherry, redcurrant and wild blueberry. Scents of licorice, white pepper and dried rose add fullness while underlining the fruit.
The palate reveals a full, silky body, skilfully counterbalanced by clear acidity that lifts the wine. The tannins are structured and will soften with a few years in the cellar. Red and black fruit aromas add fleshy substance, to which the slightly smoky finish adds a persistent vertical structure. A sumptuous wine of balance and distinction, in true Domaine Matrot style.
