Long description
Domaine Danjou Banessy is located in the commune ofEspira de l'Agly, north of Perpignan in the Pyrénées Orientales. The vines are located in a vineyard with a wide variety of soils, which is one of the reasons why the Danjou Banessy wine estate produces so many parcel-based cuvées, as it is not uncommon to find juxtaposed plots with soils composed of schist, limestone, quartz, sand or silt.
The Danjou Banessy family, and more particularly the two brothers Benoît and Sébastien, have always been committed to working with plants and enriching the soil, using modern agroecological techniques such as biodynamic farming, direct seeding and agroforestry.
The 20-hectare wine estate produces white, red and orange wines. Their passion and heritage drive them to work in a low-interventionist way, always with the same aim: to bring out the terroir in the wine. A multitude of local grape varieties help them in this quest for truth. The white varieties include Carignan Gris , Muscat d'Alexandrie, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris. And Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan for the reds.
The various cuvées we have selected are all available in very limited quantities, starting with the famous Cuvée Roboul , a magnificent Roussillon wine made from a blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache from a plot on the Agly terraces. The cuvée Coste Blanc, which reconciles us with the pure Macabeu grape variety. La Truffière Blanc, a wine with a tiny yield (15 hl/ha) made from Carignan Gris over 80 years old, a great white wine for laying down. La Truffière Rouge comes from very old parcels of Grenache and Carignan on schist soils, an intense, powerful wine of rare elegance. And let's not forget the incredible Cuvée Estaca, 100% Vieux Grenache on limestone terroirs, of which only 600 are produced worldwide.
We also fell in love with their orange wine Supernova, a Muscat d'Alexandrie with honeyed notes and magnificent bitters.
In short, Domaine Danjou Banessy has won us over in every way, and stands as one of the finest wine estates in Roussillon, alongside the famous Domaine Gauby and the superb wines of Domaine Le Roc des Anges.
