Maison Stéphan is a small family-run wine estate that began producing wine in 1991 with just two hectares of Côte Rôtie vineyards. Jean-Michel Stéphan learned from great winemakers, notably the famous Jean-Paul Brun, who taught him how to bring out the terroir and energy in a wine.

Today, Maison Stéphan skillfully produces exceptional Côte-Rôtie wines .

Work in the vineyard is paramount for Jean-Michel Stéphan, who is committed to preserving traditions and tends his vines with the utmost respect for living organisms. That is why he chooses to use horses whenever possible; otherwise, everything else is done by hand. He is fortunate to have some of the oldest vines of “Sereine,” an old variety of Syrah , some of which are 120 years old.

His vineyards consist of gneiss and granite soils on steep slopes and terraces.

In the cellar, Jean Michel Stephan’s winemaking process is truly unique in the region, as he is one of the few producers to make natural wines within the Côte Rôtie appellation —and across all his cuvées. No sulfur is added throughout the entire winemaking process in order to preserve the energy emanating from the grapes and, by extension, the vineyard.

Finally, during ageing, the wines are neither fined nor filtered and are aged for 18 months in old barrels.

All the cuvées are particularly outstanding : the Syrah, the Côte Rôtie Les Binardes, Coteaux de Bassenon, Coteaux de Tupin , and the So’ Brune cuvée — all great wines from the northern Rhône Valley.
