Clusel-Roch

The Clusel Roch wine estate is a 20-hectare property with vineyards in the Côte Rôtie appellation , producing Condrieu wines ,as well as in the Coteaux Lyonnais region. Since 2021, Guillaume Clusel has been managing the wine estate, succeeding Gilbert Clusel and Brigitte Roch. The Clusel Roch wine estate prides itself on being passionately dedicated totraditional farming methods, so it was only natural for them to chooseorganic winemaking, which allows them to keep their terroir alive.

The wine estate earned its organic certification in 2002, but organic farming isn’t everything! As great lovers of the terroir and their vines, the family began creating their own “homemade” grafts and conducting massal selections of very old Syrahvarieties, notably the famous Serine. The Serine vines were planted on the Côte Rôtie “grand cru” site, the “Les Grandes Places” parcel. While these vines are certainly less productive, they impart aromas and a depth of body to the wine that are far more intriguing than any clones available on the market.

As for vineyard management, Guillaume’s parents have always paid close attention to soil cultivation, specifically light plowing and manual hoeing, despite the very steep slopes of the Côte Rôtie. This preserves the biological balance and limits erosion.

The Clusel Roch wine estate is fortunate to benefit from terroirs of the highest quality and seeks to highlight them not only through vineyard management but also during winemaking. The grapes are therefore handled with care, partially destemmed, and then transferred to vats by gravity to ensure gentle extraction.

All Côte Rôtie wines are aged in barrels, only 20% of which are new. For the Condrieu wines, the process is slightly different, as only a portion of the grapes is fermented in barrels, while the rest is fermented in stainless steel tanks. Blending takes place at the end of ageing, one year after winemaking.

At Mundovin, the wines from the Clusel Roch wine estate underwent a meticulous tasting. Following this, we chose to carry the Condrieu Verchery, an aromatic wine with exotic notes and lovely minerality. The Côte Rôtie Les Schistes, made from a mass selection of the Serine clone, is easy to enjoy even when young. The Côte Rôtie La Viallière, a superb wine for aging that is both refined and very rich; and finally, the sublime Côte Rôtie Les Grandes Places, produced in a limited run of just 3,000 bottles worldwide. A deep, intense wine that requires patience before it is ready to be enjoyed.
