The Méo-Camuzet wine estate covers 17.2 hectares, most of which are planted with Pinot Noir. The remaining 3.6 hectares are dedicated to white wines, with Chardonnay taking center stage—a variety that thrives on the limestone-marl slopes.
It was Jean-Nicolas who took over the wine estate in 1983. He truly breathed new life into the wine estate. At just 20 years old, he wasn’t prepared to become a winemaker but agreed to give it a try. Little by little, he immersed himself in how a wine estate operates, in vineyard work, and in winemaking. He surrounded himself with the right people and wasn’t afraid to seek advice; in particular, he received invaluable guidance from one of the world’s greatest winemakers, the renowned Henri Jayer. Jayer shared his expertise, techniques, and the full art of Burgundian winemaking.
In 2003, Jean Nicolas and his sister decided to create a “haute couture” wine merchant company . Its goal was to better meet growing demand and expand the range to include more accessible wines. Thus was born the company Méo-Camuzet Frères et Soeurs, with its own distinct label. But Jean Nicolas’s approach to wine trading is not a traditional one. In fact, he meticulously inspects the vineyards with each vintage and purchases the grapes directly from the vines. This is not merely a matter of buying grapes, but rather a thorough process of selecting plots that have been monitored over several years.
Today, the Méo-Camuzet wine estate is among the most renowned in Burgundy, and the team continues to craft the wine with love and respect. Vineyard work is carried out without any chemical inputs or mechanical tools. The harvest is, of course, done by hand, with several successive sorting stages to ensure only the finest clusters are selected. Winemaking is also minimally interventionist, highlighting the distinct terroirs of the Côte de Nuits that the estate owns. Notably, their sublime Chambolle-Musigny Village and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes, as well as their Gevrey-Chambertin. And how could we forget their superb Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre and the extremely rare Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru?
As you can see, the Méo-Camuzet wine estate is among the highest-quality wine estates in the Côte de Nuits. Its wines can be found in the finest cellars and on the most prestigious tables around the world. The next generation is ready to take the reins, as Jean Nicolas has three children. A new generation of winemakers? It’s still too early to say—and to write this chapter in the wine estate’s history.
