Long description
The François Lumpp wine estate is one of the leading names in the Givry appellation. Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, this family-run wine estate embodies the passion and excellence of terroir-based viticulture. Since its creation in 1991 by François and Isabelle Lumpp, it has forged a solid reputation thanks to a rigorous approach and intimate knowledge of the marl-limestone soils that make Givry wines so unique.
Before setting up his own estate, François Lumpp gained extensive experience working on the family wine estate. In 1991, together with his wife Isabelle, he decided to forge his own path, farming a modest area of less than 4 hectares from the family estate. With time and unfailing determination, the wine estate grew steadily to reach its current size of around 9.5 hectares, planted exclusively with Premier Cru.
From the outset, François Lumpp chose to seek out the best terroirs, not hesitating to replant old, fallow plots in order to reveal their full potential. This visionary and demanding approach has enabled the wine estate to earn its letters of nobility and become a veritable institution in Givry. Domaine François Lumpp benefits from an exceptional terroir, composed mainly of marly-limestone soils, renowned for their ability to produce wines of great finesse and mineral tension. The vineyards are located on east- and southeast-facing slopes, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes while preserving their freshness.
Pinot Noir occupies the majority of plantings, with red cuvées distinguished by their elegance and depth. Chardonnay, though less present, is given special attention. The white plots are located in the coolest, most chalky areas of the vineyard, producing wines of remarkable aromatic precision.
Each plot is cultivated with absolute respect for the soil and the plant. The soil is rigorously tilled to encourage deep rooting of the vines. The majority of treatments are organic and biological, limiting the use of synthetic products in order to preserve biodiversity and the natural balance of the vines. Reducing yields is another priority, with practices such as disbudding and, if necessary, green harvesting to ensure optimal berry concentration.
In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy of the François Lumpp wine estate is based on a minimalist approach that respects the fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand, then carefully sorted to retain only the best bunches. The red wines are completely destemmed to enhance the aromatic purity and finesse of the tannins.
Fermentation takes place in open stainless steel tanks, with moderate pumping-over and punching-down to gently extract color and tannins. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with a carefully measured proportion of new wood: around 30% for whites and up to 70% for reds. This mastery of ageing allows the wines to develop a beautiful aromatic complexity while preserving their freshness and mineral expression.
Today, François Lumpp is gradually passing on the torch to his children, Pierre and Anne-Cécile. Pierre works in the vineyards alongside Anne-Cécile's partner, while Anne-Cécile is in charge of winemaking and ageing. Driven by the same passion and attention to detail as their father, they continue to refine cultivation practices, encouraging greater biodiversity and adapting winemaking to changing climatic conditions.
