Le Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru from Domaine des Lambrays is one of those legendary terroirs that only Burgundy knows how to produce. In addition to being Burgundy’s largest Grand Cru, it is above all one of the most prestigious and high-quality terroirs in the world. This virtual monopoly consists of a series of gentle slopes whose diverse exposures contribute significantly to the complexity of the rare wines produced there. The upper part of the vineyard rests on marl soils, while the lower section combines clay and limestone, offering a natural contrast that the forty-year-old Pinot Noir vines express with depth. Under the leadership of Jacques Devauges, former estate manager of the renowned Clos de Tart, Domaine des Lambrays has, in recent years, embarked on a shift toward quality that has cemented its legendary status. Organic viticulture is combined with meticulous plot-by-plot work, strictly manual harvesting, and exclusively natural fermentation. For this Clos des Lambrays, aging takes place in the estate’s cellars over an 18-month period, in oak barrels, half of which are replaced each year. The result is one of those rare and legendary wines of the Côte de Nuits, built to stand the test of time.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru represents a sort of stylistic center of gravity for the Domaine des Lambrays. Neither ostentatious nor austere in its youth, it develops natural breadth, a precise tannic structure, and above all, tremendous complexity once it reaches maturity. The aging process highlights the deep and nuanced character of the climat, in a vintage that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its prestigious predecessors. One of the most remarkable Burgundian Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits, it is a true model of balance and elegance with immense potential.
On the nose, the bouquet is still somewhat reserved but already brimming with a contained power that wafts from the glass. Black cherry, fresh red currant, and wild berries form a lively, vibrant fruit profile interwoven with the delicacy of rose, violet, and peony. A tertiary, smoky dimension emerges as the wine opens up, evoking mushrooms, forest floor, blond tobacco, and noble spices. Together, these elements create a harmonious olfactory landscape full of promise.
The palate also exudes the restrained power of this Grand Cru, with an energy and depth that are just waiting to blossom after a few years in the cellar. The body is as full-bodied as it is voluptuous, structured by silky tannins of great finesse. The savory finish unfolds elegant flavors of red and black fruits, delicate spices, and forest floor notes, and the aftertaste is marked by a striking mouthfeel that lingers indefinitely.
