Wine Description
The Montée de Tonnerre Chablis Premier Cru from the Jean Paul and Benoit Droin wine estate is one of the finest Premier Crus on the Right Bank. The vines are planted on typical Chablis limestone and marl soils. They are also criss-crossed by a vein of blue clay that gives them their distinctive minerality. The vines are over 50 years old and face west, giving the Chardonnay a moderate amount of sunshine. Only 9500 bottles of this highly sought-after cuvée are produced worldwide.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : The Montée de Tonnerre premier cru is my favorite of the Chablis premier crus. It has a taut, mineral profile and outstanding ageing potential. Jean Paul and Benoît Droin have opted for a winemaking method that is half oak and half stainless steel, in order to preserve freshness while providing the wine with micro-oxygenation.
The nose is simply crystal-clear . The sensation of purity is indescribable. There's a dominant mineral structure, with hints of flint, wet pebbles, fresh grass and mint.
On tasting, the wine is just as crystalline as on the nose. Citrus and white peach aromas merge perfectly with mineral and saline notes. A great Chablis wine, deserving of Grand Cru status.
A Chablis must!
