Jean-Philippe Padié 's cuvée Gibraltar comes from a 60-year-old plot of Grenache Noir, rooted in the blue marls of the Causse limestone of Calce, in the Roussillon region. This west-facing plot on a windy promontory is perfect for a dry, mineral terroir, cultivated organically using biodynamic practices. Jean-Philippe Padié, who trained with the likes of Gauby and Mas Amiel, has always sought to celebrate the fundamentals: manual labor, minimal intervention, respectful ageing. No new wood, virtually no sulfur: Gibraltar is a natural wine designed to faithfully reflect its terroir as a whole.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Gibraltar is a cuvée that asserts its personality from the very first sip. Jean-Philippe Padié brings out the vitality of Grenache without artifice, against the grain of its sunniest expressions. Here, freshness, minerality and depth take precedence over power.
On the nose, the wine reveals notes of brandied cherry, peony and spices with equal lightness and depth. A hint of smoke adds a further layer of depth and precision.
On the palate, the attack is supple, immediately juicy, followed by a fruity ripeness without overdose. The structure is held together by fine, well-coated tannins that glide smoothly without lingering. The structure reveals a subtle saline tension that lengthens the wine and makes it easy to digest, while the finish, straight and pure, expresses itself with persistent freshness and harmonious aromatics.
