Wine Description
Les Métairies du Clos Vieilles Vignes is one of the Clos Marie wine estate's prestige cuvées. It's a wine that surpasses most of the great southern wines from the most prestigious appellations. The blend of 60-year-old Grenache, Syrah and Carignan vines on complex terroirs gives the wine a rare depth. The terroir from which this wine is made lies at the heart of the Pic Saint Loup appellation. It ranks among the top 10 Languedoc wines of all appellations.
Les Métairies du Clos wines are still produced by the genius Christophe Peyrus. He produces not only Clos Marie wines, but also those of his eponymous wine estate. For him, working the vines is the most important thing in making a great wine. That's why he uses biodynamic principles to bring as much depth, freshness and elegance as possible to his wines.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Les Métairies du Clos rouge is the emblematic cuvée that epitomizes the work carried out at the wine estate. It's a complex, spicy wine, very greedy, full of vivacity and endowed with a certain elegance for such a southern wine. It's a rather rare product, but one that doesn't play up its rarity and therefore remains affordable.
The first nose reveals rather animal, spicy notes with hints of garrigue. After a fine oxygenation, the fruit comes to the fore and notes of blackcurrant and blackberry appear. A hint of balsamic and a touch of menthol round off this superb nose.
On the palate, it's a different story. The attack is powerful and racy, with notes of ripe black fruit without any heaviness. The spiciness comes through with notes of cinnamon, clove and black pepper. The wine finishes beautifully, with extraordinary length and freshness.
