Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc du Vieux Donjon was born on the appellation's emblematic soils. Located between Châteauneuf and Courthézon, the soils are a blend of clay, limestone and pebbles capable of storing heat during the day and releasing it at night. This mineral landscape, shaped by the Rhône, allows the vines to ripen slowly and evenly, without ever upsetting the balance. The grape varieties are based on the appellation's classic duo of Clairette and Roussanne, carefully cultivated and hand-harvested to preserve the precision of the fruit. Faithful to a no-frills approach, the wine estate favors winemaking in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in the same spirit to preserve the natural freshness and clarity of the terroir, far from any woody influence.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Le Vieux Donjon's Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc goes against the grain of some opulent interpretations of the appellation. Here, Le Vieux Donjon has produced a fine, nuanced and perfectly controlled white, in which substance is at the service of balance. It occupies a special, almost exclusive place in the wine estate's range, offering a lighter, more precise interpretation of white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It's a table wine, in the noblest sense of the word, capable of accompanying both delicate and more structured cuisine.
The nose unfolds with restraint, then gradually opens up, revealing an elegant framework of white flowers, ripe pear, juicy peach and fresh citrus fruit, enhanced by nuances of orange blossom and lemon zest. With aeration, the bouquet gains in depth, revealing hints of fennel, honey and a chalky minerality that subtly structures the whole.
The palate extends this impression of controlled balance: the attack is supple and luminous, sustained by a discreet but essential freshness. Full-bodied, without excess, the wine unfolds ripe white fruit, citrus and aniseed flavors before stretching to a straightforward, saline and persistent finish. An accurate reading of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where elegance takes precedence over demonstration.
