Wine Description

On the edge of the Pommard finage, Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet de Marquis d'Angerville stands out for its particular location, at the northeastern end of the appellation. The 1.57-hectare parcel is one of the historic terroirs of this Côte de Beaune village, and has imposed the particularity of its northern climate. Fremiet, already mentioned in 19th-century cadastral documents, takes its name from the stones that litter its soils. The slope is steep all the way to mid-slope, ensuring natural, efficient drainage, aided by the shallow soil at the top, just below the Clos des Ducs. Although close to Pommard, the style remains typically Volnaysian, marked by its structure and elegance. In the purest Burgundian tradition, this terroir is dedicated to Pinot Noir, and has been biodynamically farmed by Domaine Marquis d'Angerville since 2006. This respect for the vines and the living world excludes all chemical treatments in favor of natural products, applied according to the rhythm of the vine and the moon. The grapes are hand-harvested and completely de-stemmed before gentle extraction and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This traditional, non-interventionist winemaking allows the natural expression of each vintage to reflect the soul of the terroir as faithfully as possible. Once fermentation is complete, the musts are gently pressed, then gravity-fed into oak barrels, where the wine spends around 18 months. The proportion of new barrels varies with each vintage, but never exceeds 20%.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : If Clos des Ducs embodies verticality, this Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville seduces with its finesse. In this vintage, the wine estate has succeeded in revealing the delicate soul of this ancestral climate, whose mixed clay and limestone soils give it an elegance and refinement all its own. This is a wine that often takes a little longer than others to express its potential, but rewards patience with exceptional aromatic depth and tannic structure. Its proximity to Pommard gives it a profile that is often more robust and earthy, making it one of the great wines of Burgundy.

The nose is dense and racy, yet full of finesse. There are bright aromas of raspberry and burlat cherry, the signature of Pinot Noir on Volnay terroirs. The bouquet gains in complexity as the wine opens up to elegant floral notes, evoking violets and peony, and beautiful touches of licorice, undergrowth and black pepper.

On the palate, this wine has a supple, precise attack that immediately reveals the brightness and generosity of red fruits, dominated by raspberry and cherry. The fine tannins create a slightly firm structure that carries the fullness and velvety texture with refinement. The finish is marked by a noble bitterness and a spicy persistence that underscore the wine's ageing potential.
