Wine Description

Moric's Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is an exceptional selection of Blaufränkisch from Burgenland's oldest and most prestigious vineyards. The Lutzmannsburg plateau, formed on a primitive volcano, is covered with layers of calcareous sandstone, clay, sand and volcanic deposits from the Pannonian Sea. Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben reaches its full potential after four years, but can ideally be aged for a decade or more.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : For this Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben , six parcels were carefully selected with vines aged between 85 and 110 years. Around 20% of the harvest was fermented in whole bunches. Fermentation in open wooden vats, after a spontaneous start, lasted 23-28 days. The wine was then aged for 11 months on the lees in 500- and 600-liter barrels, undergoing spontaneous malolactic fermentation, then a further 12 months in 500-liter barrels.

On the nose, the wine reveals aromas of herbs, elderberries, black cherries and blackberries, accompanied by notes of tar, peat and wood. After a few hours' aeration, it reveals even more nuances of berry, stone and violet.

The palate is dense and generous, yet balanced and precise. The wine oscillates between red and black berries, wild herbs and notes of stone and earth. The tannins are ripe and elegant, lining the palate with velvet and silk, while dancing on the tongue. This wine is already magnificent to date, but will become even more complex with time.
