Wine Description
Moric’s Blaufränkisch Reserve is the creation of Roland Velich, a visionary winemaker from Austria’s Burgenland region who has dedicated his life to elevating this indigenous grape variety to the ranks of the world’s finest red wines. This Reserve, a selection of the wine estate’s finest barrels, combines grapes from the steep, limestone-schist slopes of Neckenmarkt with those from vineyards on the clay-limestone soils of the Lutzmannsburg plateau, two terroirs with distinct characters whose blend produces a layered complexity of rare coherence. This age-worthy wine, often compared to the great Pinot Noirs of Burgundy for its finesse, single-handedly redefines what Blaufränkisch can achieve when driven by uncompromising ambition.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Moric’s Blaufränkisch Reserve is one of the wines that impresses him most in a blind tasting, as its purity and tension instinctively bring it closer to the great Burgundies than to Austrian reds, which one might imagine to be more generous and less precise. This cuvée is the ultimate demonstration of Roland Velich’s genius, capable of extracting from a little-known grape variety a mineral depth and saline freshness that make it a fine dining wine and a cellar-worthy wine.
The nose makes a striking impression with its purity and intensity, unfolding aromas of intense black fruits such as blackberry, sloe, and black cherry, carried by earthy and stony nuances of great elegance. Notes of black olives, fresh herbs, and forest floor enrich this complex bouquet, while a subtle floral touch and a hint of garrigue spice add an extra dimension to this aromatic profile of rare depth.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and taut, with a salinity that cuts across the palate with a precision that is surprising for a red wine. The refined, perfectly integrated tannins frame an elegant structure where aromas of black fruits, olives, cardamom, and tobacco blend together, leading to a long, mineral, and persistent finish that promises remarkable aging potential over the years.
