Wine Description
Domaine Pique-Basse’s Côtes du Rhône Villages Le Chasse-Cœur holds a special place inOlivier Tropet’s lineup and embodies the soul of the Côtes du Rhône. The vineyards, located in Roaix, are rooted in the low alluvial terraces—a mix of sand and silty clay—in the heart of the Rhône Valley. The blend consists primarily of Grenache (80 %), complemented by Syrah (10 %) and Cinsault (10 %), sourced from vines that are 40 years old for the Grenache and 25 to 30 years old for the Syrah and Cinsault. Grown using organic and biodynamic farming methods, this cuvée is produced through hand harvest, gentle winemaking with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, and ageing in stainless steel or cement tanks—all in keeping with the wine estate’s goal of expressing the terroir without artifice.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: “Le Chasse-Cœur from Domaine Pique-Basse was conceived in the spirit of authentic village wines—generous, structured, and approachable.” It stands out within the Côtes du Rhône range for its density and freshness, while offering immediate drinkability. It perfectly reflects Olivier Tropet’s vision of a balance between power and elegance.
The nose opens with a very expressive profile: jammy red fruits such as cherry and plum signal beautiful ripeness, punctuated by smoky, empyreumatic nuances. There is also a hint of delicately spiced notes that add aromatic depth to the overall profile.
On the palate, the wine is deep and full-bodied, supported by fine, structuring tannins. Red fruits dominate, enhanced by a hint of black pepper and a slightly smoky mineral note. The perfectly balanced acidity brings freshness and liveliness, making the wine both easy to drink and long-lasting. The clean, decisive finish prolongs the smoky and spicy aromas and highlights the terroir’s character without artifice.
