Wine Description
Sylvain Pataille 's Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes illustrates the talent and precision of this exceptional Burgundy winemaker. Situated on the heights of Marsannay, in the Côte de Nuits, the Les Grasses Têtes parcel lies on clay-rich soil with a few banks of white limestone. A biodynamic wine estate, Domaine Sylvain Pataille cultivates and harvests its Pinot Noir vines by hand. The grapes are whole-bunch destemmed, and fermented naturally with the indigenous yeasts present on the berries. The wine is then aged in barrels for 18 months, with around 15% new wood, and little sulfite added at bottling to respect the aromatic expression and imprint of the terroir.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Sylvain Pataille 's Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes is a powerful yet refined expression of Marsannay. However, this cuvée requires a little patience to fully reveal its balance and depth. Domaine Sylvain Pataille manages to master the high ripeness of the Grasses Têtes parcel while maintaining a low-interventionist approach. The result is a Marsannay of great elegance, faithful to the spirit of the Côte de Nuits.
The cuvée reveals an intense, complex nose, marked by aromas of ripe red and black fruit, where cherry and raspberry mingle with blackcurrant and blackberry. Floral notes of violet and rose add a touch of elegance to this aromatic palette.
The palate reveals a silky, broad body, with a fine concentration of fruit, supported by a fine, straight tannic structure, still a little tight. Perfectly integrated acidity adds freshness to the Pinot Noir's ripeness, opening up a complex finish with notes of undergrowth, licorice and cocoa.
