Albert Boxler wine estate

Domaine Albert Boxler is based in Niedermorschwihr, a steep village at the foot ofAlsace's granite hillsides, along the Route des Vins. Although the family tradition dates back to 1672, it was in the immediate post-war period, in 1946, thatAlbert Boxler began bottling at the wine estate and forged the company's reputation. Today, his grandson Jean Boxler, assisted by his wife Sylvie, runs the family estate. For this passionate winemaker, convinced that the intensity of a wine comes from total commitment to every gesture in the vineyard, "wherever there's work, there are great wines". He grew up watching the harvests, tasting the wines of his parents and grandparents, honing his sensitivity to taste and balance. For him, the quality of a wine comes first and foremost from respect for the terroir, the vines, the grape variety and the gestures at each stage - an apprenticeship he himself describes as fundamental to developing his artistic vision of the winemaker's craft.

Today, the wine estate covers around 14 hectares of vines, planted with the noble varieties of Alsace: 38% Riesling, 20% Gewurztraminer, 17% Pinot Gris, 20% Pinot Blanc, plus a little Muscat, Sylvaner and 1 hectare of Pinot Noir planted at high altitude. Nearly half of the parcels are classified as Grand Cru, including 4 hectares in the Grand Cru Sommerberg, a natural cirque known for its very poor granite soils, where the rock virtually outcrops beneath the vines. Nearby, almost 1.9 hectares of parcels classified as Grand Cru Brand give the Riesling and Pinot Gris a more generous expression, supported by an intense minerality.

On extremely steep slopes sometimes reaching 45%, the poor, draining granite soils require almost constant manual labor, making mechanization impractical. In the vineyards, the high standards of quality that characterize the estate are reflected in incessant manual labor, where it is imperative to make multiple passes to trellis, prune short, de-bud and regulate weed growth, in order to maintain each vine at a yield of 30 to 35 hectoliters per hectare, an essential condition for extracting substance and elegance from the Alsatian grape varieties on these difficult terroirs with southern to south-eastern exposure.

Since 2003, Jean Boxler has rigorously applied the principles oforganic farming, which he sees as a matter of course, not because he adheres to a label, but as an expression of "good farming sense". Working the soil, respecting cycles, limiting treatments, and cultivating with observation are for him the core of a return to ancestral gestures, without administrative dogmatism.

The same rigor continues in the cellar: fermentations are carried out on indigenous yeasts in large old foudres or in vats, where the wines remain on fine lees, often for over a year for Grand Cru cuvées. No stirring of the lees, no artificial intervention, only patience allows the grapes to evolve, the structure to assert itself, without ever losing the aromatic purity or the verticality of the granite. Through these measured, demanding gestures, the Albert Boxler wine estate has become the embodiment of a philosophy of sustainability and expression of terroir: making wines that stand the test of time, while telling the story of place.

The wine estate's range opens with the Réserve cuvée, whose clarity reflects the refined approach of the house. The Pinot Blanc Réserve stands out for its crisp and crystal-clear structure, expressing white fruit with magnificent freshness, while the Riesling Réserve reveals a beautiful mineral tension and aromatic finesse that make it a faithful introduction to the Albert Boxler house style. The Gewurztraminer, with no residual sugar, combines spicy richness and floral elegance, without ever becoming heavy.

Then there are cuvées made from individual plots, each with its own distinct personality, such as the very rare Pinot Noir Wibtal "S". Planted at altitude, on a steep granite hillside, it develops a very Burgundian profile of juicy black fruits, underlined by a structuring freshness and finely woven tannins. With a precision rare in Alsace, this is an exceptional wine that is Jean Boxler's pride and joy.

The Grands Crus are the vibrant heart of the Albert Boxler wine estate, and on the Sommerberg heights, the Riesling and Pinot Gris cuvées take center stage. The straight, chiselled Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg embodies the quintessential talent of Jean Boxler, to whom it is dedicated. This Alsace benchmark is available in a series of cuvées that nuancedly reflect the diversity of this mythical terroir. From the Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg "D" (Dudenstein) to the Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg "V" (Vanne), not forgetting the cuvée "E" (Eckberg), each local expression reveals a facet of Alsace's finest Rieslings.

The Pinot Gris Grand Cru Sommerberg "W" (Wibtal), meanwhile, combines density and tension in a dry, vibrant, saline style that stands in stark contrast to grape variety standards.

Some distance away, the prestigious Riesling Grand Cru Brand "K", set in the granite and clay foothills of Turckheim's Kirchberg, delivers a sunnier version of the grape variety, with a full texture, ripe citrus aromas and persistent salinity that rival Europe's greatest Rieslings.
