Goepp
The Goepp Gérard et fils wine estate was founded in the 1950s by Jacques Goepp, later joined by his brother André. Gilbert took over the wine estate in 1987, followed by his brother Gérard in 1990. In 2019, Gérard's sons, Clément and Sylvain, take over, making up the 3rd generation.
While Sylvain quickly realized that his future lay with the wine estate, and trained as a viticulturist, Clément initially trained as a landscaper. Their passions and professions come together and find their full meaning at the head of the wine estate. From the outset, they have been committed to preserving the family heritage by perpetuating tradition, maintaining grass cover in the vines to prevent soil erosion, and exclusively hand harvesting since the creation of the wine estate.
It is in this spirit of working with respect for the living that they have decided to become certified organic in 2020. The vines are spread over 3 communes at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile: Barr, Bernardswiller and, of course, Heiligenstein.
All Alsace grape varieties are represented, including Klevener from Heiligenstein. As part of their efforts to enhance the value of the terroir, the cavaillon is worked on annually, using a disc harrow. In addition, the two brothers vinify without oenological inputs, in order to let the fruit and terroir express themselves to the full. As they like to say: " Our wines are grapes and that's all!
The wines that impressed us the most were the Pinot Gris Affenberg from the clay-limestone soils of the Bernardswiller commune. Their magnificent Sylvaner on the Weinberg marl-limestone hillside. The Riesling Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr, a wine that is both crystalline and delicious. L'Atypique , made from whole-cluster Pinot Gris maceration, and the superb, juicy Le Farouche Pinot Noir.
