Juicy and fresh, we love this Crozes Hermitage
Domaine du Coulet is a wine estate in the northern Rhône Valley founded in 1998 by Matthieu Barret. The vineyards are primarily located in the Cornas and Côtes du Rhône appellations. They have been cultivated using organic andbiodynamic farming methods since the beginning. Soil cultivation is carried out using draft horses across all the granite-rich slopes.
Matthieu Barret’s goal is to create wines that are as natural as possible. This is achieved through the implementation of various cultivation methods. In addition to biodynamic practices, he severely limits his yields, which averagearound 25 hectoliters per hectare. He performs regular thinning in the vineyard before harvest to retain only the highest-quality clusters.
In the cellar, every effort is made to avoid disturbing the wines. This includes long, gentle pressing, gravity-fed drainage, and no added sulfur at any stage of winemaking.
Ageing takes place in vats and barrels that have previously held wine. This method allows for good oxygenation of the wine without it being overly influenced by the wood.
Matthieu Barret has also acquired concrete tanks known as “Ovoïdes.” These are, in fact, egg-shaped tanks. They are used exclusively for winemaking of white wines.
In recent years, Matthieu Barret has proven himself to be one of the greatest winemakers in the northern Rhône Valley. We absolutely love the 2016 Billes Noires cuvée!
