Domaine Chantal Lescure has its roots in Nuits Saint Georges, where Chantal Lescure and her husband Xavier Machard de Gramont founded the estate in 1975. From the outset, they chose to create a vineyard spread between the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, covering appellations with strong identities such as Pommard, Vosne-Romanée and the prestigious Clos-Vougeot. The wine estate was built discreetly but solidly, without giving in to the effects of fashion. It wasn't until 1996 that the story took on a new dimension, with the arrival of François Chavériat at the head of production, following the death of Chantal Lescure.
Trained in Beaune, with a passion for viticulture and great terroirs, François Chavériat arrived with a clear ambition: to let the soil speak for itself, to limit intervention and to break away from the conventional methods of the time. As soon as he took over, he embarked on a complete overhaul of farming practices. Ploughing replaced weedkillers, treatments were rethought, and yields were deliberately reduced. The wine estate then began a slow but rigorous transition to organic viticulture, culminating in certification in 2006. In the cellar, winemaking was simplified, extractions limited and ageing on fine lees, without excess wood, was favored.
This rigorous approach has produced a recognizable signature: straightforward, deep, unpretentious wines that draw their energy from the soil rather than from technique. Each cuvée is the result of parcel-based winemaking, respecting the origin of the Pinot Noir or Chardonnay vines. The idea is never to smooth or seduce at all costs, but to convey the singularity of each place. Today, the wine estate continues to pursue this line, even since its takeover in 2022 by Jean-Philippe Girard, accompanied by Éric Rousseau, of the famous Domaine Armand Rousseau. François Chavériat remains at the helm, ensuring the continuity of the Chantal Lescure style, now firmly established in the wine landscape of Burgundy and beyond, where the wine estate has established itself as a trusted address, respected by professionals and sought-after by connoisseurs. Quietly, it has gradually joined the circle of essential producers, particularly for those seeking lively, balanced wines capable of ageing gracefully. The consistency of the range and the sincerity of the work are now considered benchmarks in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.
The wine estate's flagship cuvées include Pommard Les Vignots, full-bodied and expressive from its youth, and Pommard 1er Cru Les Bertins, powerful but always nuanced by an elegance akin to Volnay. The finer, more airy Beaune 1er Cru Les Chouacheux offers a different interpretation of Pinot Noir, while Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, from a parcel adjacent to the commune's finest crus, impresses with its depth. The wine estate also offers a remarkable cuvée blanche, Beaune Clos des Topes Bizot, taut, saline and precisely aged. Finally, the majestic Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of the range, a wine for laying down par excellence, with a restrained power that rivals the greatest Burgundy wines.
Domaine Chantal Lescure now occupies a secure place among the great names of Burgundy. From Nuits Saint Georges to Pommard, via Beaune and Vosne-Romanée, its cuvées embody a demanding vision, centered on natural balance, supported by mastered know-how and a keen understanding of terroirs.
