The Moric Wine Estate, founded in 2001 by Roland Velich, is a must-visit destination for lovers of exceptional Austrian wines. Located in the Burgenland region, this wine estate spans 12.8 hectares and produces fewer than 50,000 bottles per year, ensuring impeccable quality.

Roland Velich, along with his brother, first gained recognition for his Burgundian-style white wines. However, his passion for the Blaufränkisch grape led him to establish the Moric Wine Estate. Contrary to the regional trend favoring full-bodied wines, Roland distinguishes himself by crafting wines of extreme elegance and finesse. He has explored and acquired old vineyards near Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt to realize his unique vision.

Roland Velich produces two iconic red wines from the Blaufränkisch grape variety

  1. Moric Blaufränkisch: Structured yet delicate, this wine comes from vines grown on schist and limestone soils in the foothills of Mount Otenburger.
  2. Blaufränkisch Lutzmannsburg: Made from grapes grown on loess, limestone, and silt soils, this wine offers generous and full-bodied flavors.

In addition to its red wines, the wine estate produces a white wine made from Grüner Veltliner, grown on the chalky slopes of Sankt Georgen. This wine stands out for its perfect balance of fullness, spice, and minerality. For us, this is the greatest wine produced from this grape variety. In fact, it is not a varietal wine, but a truly great terroir wine.

All of Domaine Moric’s wines are crafted using traditional methods, with indigenous yeasts and ageing in large tanks with very little new oak. This approach preserves the pure expression of the terroir and the grape varieties.

Roland Velich is known for his candor and uncompromising vision. He criticizes overly concentrated and artificially modified styles of Blaufränkisch, preferring fresh, fragrant, and delicate wines reminiscent of Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, or Syrah from the Northern Rhône. His pursuit of excellence and respect for the grape variety has earned him worldwide recognition today, despite differences of opinion with some local producers.
