Long description
Perched in the charming village of Katzenthal, at the foot of the granite hills of the Vosges, Domaine Meyer-Fonné embodies the soul of an Alsatian vineyard where tradition, exacting standards and the expression of terroirs come together. Founded at the end of the XIXᵉ century by Félix Meyer, the wine estate has remained a family business over the generations.
It was in 1992 that the current owner and grandson of the founder, also named Félix Meyer, took over the reins of the wine estate with the determination to bring it into a new era without betraying its heritage. After rigorous training at the Institut Viticole d'Avize in Champagne, he completed his apprenticeship in the field with internships in Burgundy and Bordeaux. On his return, aged just 21, he embarked on an in-depth transformation of the family wine estate: precise parcel-by-parcel work, raising the standard of red cuvées, commitment to organic farming. His style, refined over the years, combines purity, elegance and fidelity to the soil, earning Domaine Meyer-Fonné national and international recognition.
Today, the vines cover eighteen hectares in the seven communes of Katzenthal, Ammerschwihr, Ingersheim, Riquewihr, Kientzheim, Colmar and Bennwihr, producing a range of wines renowned for their precision, depth and authenticity. At the heart of this wine-growing adventure, Domaine Meyer-Fonné maintains a fundamental relationship with the terroir. Each parcel is cultivated with respect for natural balance, using certified organic viticulture and biodynamic practices. Soils are ploughed, treatments are reduced to the strict minimum, and harvesting is always done by hand. In the winery, winemaking is low-intervention, allowing the personality of each grape variety and terroir to shine through. Some cuvées are aged in stainless steel vats to preserve their brilliance, while others are matured in old foudres to encourage the expression of the soil and slow evolution.
The vineyard is planted mainly with Riesling, the king of Alsace grapes, but also with Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Pinot Noir and even Syrah - a local rarity that the wine estate boldly vinifies. Geological diversity is a major asset of the wine estate. There are granite, marl, limestone and sandstone terroirs, no fewer than seven of which are classified as Alsace Grand Cru: Wineck Schlossberg, Schœnenbourg, Kaefferkopf, Sporen, Mandelberg, Furstentum and Pfoeller. The wine estate also makes the most of characterful localities such asAltenbourg, located below the Furstentum Grand Cru, and Hinterburg in Katzenthal, whose exposure and soils allow for a singular expression of the grape varieties. Each brings its own signature: tension and minerality on the granite, fullness and spice on the marl, finesse and depth on the limestone. It is this richness that Félix Meyer seeks to express in his wines, with a sense of moderation that always favors elegance over showiness.
This quest for excellence is embodied in expressive cuvées, built to last but already full of charm. The Riesling Vignoble de Katzenthal reveals dazzling freshness against a background of gunflint. The Riesling Grand Cru Wineck Schlossberg deploys great mineral tension with an extraordinary crystalline structure, while the broader, more complex Riesling Grand Cru Schoenenbourg blends candied citrus, smokiness and noble bitterness.
Lovers of aromatic whites will find the Gewurztraminer Réserve smooth and balanced, and the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Kaefferkopf a deeper, floral, subtly spicy version. Katzenthal's Pinot Gris Hinterburg offers a racy, almost saline expression of a demanding terroir.
In reds, the Pinot Noir Réserve charms with its suppleness and frankness, while the Pinot Noir Altenbourg, from a limestone terroir, develops a fine grain and beautiful complexity. The more ambitious Pinot Noir Gallus expresses all the magnificence of the grape variety in Alsace, with a juicy, deep and elegantly oaky texture. Finally, the Syrah Le Samson surprises with its freshness and southern balance, signalling the controlled audacity of a winemaker who never ceases to push back the boundaries of what's possible.
This is the portrait of a wine estate that brilliantly combines respect for the past, an awareness of the terroir and an eye to the future. An exclusive address that has become a must for those seeking, in a glass of wine, the truth of the soil and the soul of a place. Under the direction of Félix Meyer, Domaine Meyer-Fonné has become a benchmark as discreet as it is admired, regularly acclaimed by critics and the specialist press.
