Long description
The Ostertag wine estate is first and foremost a family affair. A family which, over 3 generations, has succeeded in raising the wine estate to the absolute summit of the region. Arthur Ostertag, André's son, is the current winemaker. Like his father, he makes well-balanced wines that are both fine and deep. He's still a gifted winemaker, constantly evolving his wines with the times, in line with climate change and new knowledge.
André, a gifted winemaker
André was just 21 when his father Adolphe left him the keys to the Ostertag winery and wine estate. He had been shaping his vineyard since the 1960s, and never stopped trying to acquire parcels of the finest terroirs in and around Epfig.
As soon as he arrived at the wine estate, André Ostertag distinguished himself by the originality of his approach, which is guided by a highly developed sense of precision. He crafts his wines like a sculptor works stone, and doesn't hesitate to let his instincts guide him. In particular, he has chosen to age some of his cuvées in the Burgundian style, restoring the prestige of Sylvaner, so often relegated to the status of a counter wine.
André Ostertag has also been a proponent of biodynamic viticulture since the late 1990s. Through this method, he seeks to restore the most complex nuances and express the energy of the plant and terroir.
Through his cuvées, André creates works of art that celebrate the encounter between fruit and terroir. Terroirs scattered between the communes of Epfig, Nothalten, Itterswiller, Ribeauvillé and Albé. Each with its own identity.
Whether riesling, pinot gris, pinot blanc or sylvaner, André and his son Arthur focus on straightforward, deep, harmonious wines.
Arthur's successor is now official
Arthur Ostertag, whose first vintage was 2018, impressed his father by making choices André would never have made. In particular, his time at the legendary Comte Lafon in Meursault enabled him to get to grips with other winemaking methods. Dominique Lafon is perhaps the greatest winemaker of his generation in Burgundy. His wines under the D comme Dominique label are living proof of this.
The wines produced by André and now Arthur Ostertag are soulful wines, from the Riesling Heissenberg to the Riesling Muenchberg Grand Cru and his magnificent terroir wines from Fronholz. We can't help but be fascinated by his wines when we taste them. He transcends his terroir through precise, meticulous work. An essential Alsace winemaker. An immense favorite that will encourage any wine enthusiast to continue tasting Alsace wines.
