Clos du Val d'Eléon from the Kreydenweiss wine estate is a blend of two noble grape varieties, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Nestled on a unique terroir of blue schist dating from the Precambrian era, the Clos lies at the foot of the prestigious Clos Rebberg. This historic terroir gives the wine a deep, racy minerality, offering a singular signature reminiscent of the imprint of ancient rocks. It's this minerality that marks each vintage of Val d'Eléon with stony notes, almost evoking the texture and aroma of the schists themselves.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Created gradually from 1985 onwards, this Clos is the fruit of the passion of Marc Kreydenweiss and his son Antoine, who have respected the biodiversity of the site. Here, biodynamic practices are omnipresent, with no synthetic inputs, and the vines are pampered naturally to bring out the subtleties of the terroir to the full. Vinified without additional sulfur (except during bottling) and aged in old foudres, Clos du Val d'Eléon is distinguished by its complex bouquet.
The initial nose is floral and herbaceous, with hints of fennel, mint and verbena. As the wine opens up, it generously reveals fruit aromas such as apple, pear, yellow plum and even a touch of candied citrus. Spices follow, evoking pepper, bergamot and ginger, while a subtle iodine note completes the picture.
On the palate, this dry wine offers a grainy texture reminiscent of schist, enveloping a full-bodied structure with fruity roundness and persistent mineral tension. The powerful, subtly tannic finish perfectly interweaves fruit and rock, perfectly illustrating the notion of"vin de terroir".
