In the heart of the steep-sided Katzenthal valley, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht 's Riesling Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg is planted on one ofAlsace's most vertiginous granite terroirs. On these steep, south-east to south-west-facing slopes, the vines plunge into biotite granite with two micas of rare purity, giving the forty-year-old vines a mineral base that imbues the wines with a singular tension. The microclimate of this natural cirque, warm and luminous by day but cooled by altitude in the evening, shapes homogeneous ripeness and preserves aromatic finesse. Domaine Zind Humbrecht nurtures its Riesling vines here, which are biodynamically cultivated and harvested at a limited yield of 29 hL/ha. For the 2023 vintage, the slow, natural fermentation of indigenous yeasts has produced a vibrant cru, firmly rooted in its terroir, whose expression is magnified by prolonged ageing on total lees. The result is a luminous interpretation of this Grand Cru Wineck Schlossberg, taut with the vertical minerality of granite.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Domaine Zind Humbrech 's Riesling Grand Cru Wineck Schlossberg is one of the rareAlsace Grand Cru wines where granite fully assumes its sculptural dimension. In this vintage, the Riesling expresses itself with a remarkable precision of structure, crisp and crystal-clear, while the ripeness of the fruit brings balance to the natural austerity of the cru, with that very special way that the terroir has of making the material vibrate without overflowing. Here, we find great staying power, sure balance and the capacity for long aging that makes Wineck Schlossberg a must for understanding the great dry Rieslings ofAlsace Grand Cru.
The nose opens with great finesse on ripe citrus aromas, enhanced by hints of fine spices and medicinal herbs that recall the freshness of the slope and the restraint characteristic of granite. With aeration, the wine gains in precision and intensity, revealing a tighter structure where minerality emerges without overpowering the fruit.
The palate is beautifully concentrated, marked by a lively energy that runs through the entire tasting experience. The material is as dense as it is slender, thanks to the continuous mineral tension that delicately tightens the wine's body on the finish. The dry character coats the palate with naturalness, supported by the salivating vibration of the terroir on a finish of breathtaking length and finesse.
